For the first time, Leiston is hosting its own Great Big Green Week! We’re putting on a series of fun activities to help you enjoy the nature and sustainable activities on offer in Leiston.

What is The Great Big Green Week?

The Great Big Green Week is the UK’s biggest celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature!

During this week communities, schools, businesses and churches come together in a wave of support for action to protect the planet. Tacking action to stand together for good shows our support for a safer, greener, fairer future.

The Big Green Trail

Leiston – All week

Come and join our Big Green Trail to explore our fantastic town, there’s nothing better than getting out and enjoying nature. Did you know all of these wonderful spaces are on your doorstep? Leiston-cum-Sizewell Town Council are working to improve these spaces for you to enjoy.

Pick up a leaflet with a map and questions from any of these locations:

  • Town Council Offices
  • Leiston Film Theatre
  • Leiston Library
  • Nichols Family Butchers
  • Platts Fruit & Veg
  • Project 47
  • Co-op
  • Leiston Leisure Centre

Completed correct answers will receive a prize at the Community Orchard event on Thursday 11th June or The Town Council Office before Friday 12th.

Leiston's Repair Cafe

The Long Shop Museum – 6th June – 1100-1330

At this event, we’ll have a range of skilled volunteers on hand to help fix your broken items. All you need to do is turn up with something that’s not working but has the potential to be repaired, and we’ll do our best to bring it back to life.

We’ll have a go at fixing most things; however, for safety reasons, we’re unable to work on items containing fuel or oil, and we cannot accept microwaves.

While we can’t guarantee that everything can be fixed, we’re always happy to give it a go!

Pedal to Zero Day

The Waterloo Centre – 8th June – 1000-1500

On Pedal to Zero Day, Martin from Martin’s Bicycle Repairs will be joining us to share his expertise in bike maintenance. Between 1000-1200and then 1300-1500, you can book a 30-minute individual slot where Martin will take a look at your bike to repair it or provide you with some tailored advice but these are on a first-come first-served basis so be quick! To book one of these 30-minute sessions fill in them form linked below there is more info on what we need on the form.

If you don’t have a bike, or don’t currently have one that needs fixing, you’re still very welcome to attend our free bike maintenance session at the Waterloo Centre, this will be running from 1200-1300. Martin will be on hand to explain some basic maintenance techniques and show you how to regularly check your bike to keep it safe and in good working condition.

We’ll also be sharing information about Net Zero Leiston’s Pedal to Zero initiative, including how to hire the bikes and access discount codes.

Big Bug Hunt and Foster a Forest Launch

The Community orchard – 11th June – 1400-1600

Enjoy a private Big Bug Hunt for local primary pupils, with parents invited after school pick-up, and take part in Foster a Forest by collecting one of Net zero Leiston’s sapling to care for at home until it’s ready for planting back out in one of Leiston’s green spaces.

Leiston Film Theatre – 11th June – 1800-2015

Watch Power Station to explore community energy and discover how it could benefit you and Leiston, followed by a panel discussion to ask questions and learn more.
Community Energy England’s definition of Community Energy = “Community energy refers to the delivery of community-led renewable energy, energy demand reduction and energy supply projects, whether wholly owned and/or controlled by communities or through a partnership with commercial or public sector partners.”
